What
makes a great teacher? The students who nominated Dr.
Inez Giles for the Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence
Award
praised her “confidence in her students” and
her ability to relate concepts to real-world scenarios,
among other things. Giles serves as the human resource
management course chair and teaches several courses,
including BMGT 312 Women in Business, HRMN 300 Human
Resource Management, and IFSM 461 Systems Analysis
and Design. The

New Linked Degree Programs
with CCBC and HCC
Just
beginning your undergraduate studies? You may want
to consider the linked degree programs offered through
UMUC’s alliances with the Community
College of Baltimore County (CCBC) and Harford Community
College (HCC).
By enrolling
in an alliance program, you ensure that every credit
you earn toward your associate’s
degree at CCBC or HCC counts toward your bachelor’s
degree requirements at UMUC. As an alliance student,
you can enroll simultaneously at both institutions–without
having to pay the UMUC admission fee.
In addition,
you may be eligible for UMUC scholarships that are
designated for community college graduates. “Last
year, we had seven students with scholarships to UMUC,” said
HCC President Claudia Chiesi. “It made a big
difference in their career choices.”
“UMUC is making
a concerted effort to ensure that the university’s
programs are readily accessible to students at all
of the state’s community colleges,” said
UMUC President Gerald Heeger. Visit www.umuc.edu/alliances for
information about all of UMUC’s alliances with
Maryland community colleges and alliance admission
applications.
New Site in Hagerstown Opens
UMUC
will be among the first institutions to deliver programs
at the new USM Hagerstown Education Center, located
in downtown Hagerstown. At this site, you can choose
from upper-level courses leading toward a bachelor’s
degree in accounting. You also will have access to
on-site academic advising and the computer labs located
in this impressive new facility. If you have already
completed an articulated associate’s degree at
a Maryland community college (particularly Hagerstown
Community College), these programs should be ideal.

Online Financial Guidance for Military Families
Military
families face unique financial challenges as a result
of deployment, frequent moves, and other aspects of
military life. Now these families can find guidance
on both general and military-specific financial issues
through the Household International Military Financial
Education Center, a Web site developed by UMUC and
funded by a grant from Household International.
With more than
800 pages of financial information and numerous online
calculators, the site helps military families make
decisions about credit management, home ownership,
retirement, and other important issues. The site has
been featured in the Baltimore Sun and the Christian
Science Monitor, which called it one of the best Web
sites offering personal finance advice to military
families. Visit the Web site at http://militaryfinance.umuc.edu.
UMUC Receives Award in Distance Learning
UMUC recently added another award to its growing collection of honors. The International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) awarded UMUC the 2004 Prize of Excellence for “the highest possible excellence in the fields of open, distance, virtual, and flexible learning.” UMUC President Gerald Heeger will accept the award in Oslo, Norway, in April 2005.
The ICDE is a global organization of universities, national and regional associations, and government entities involved in distance education in 142 countries. The ICDE Prize of Excellence is considered to be the highest international honor recognizing achievement in distance education.
