Earn Credit for College-Level Learning
Gained Outside of the Classroom

The UMUC Prior Learning program recognizes the value of what you’ve learned through life and work experiences

You have probably acquired a wealth of college-level learning outside the classroom—from your work, military service, or community and volunteer activities. At UMUC, you may be able to translate this experiential learning into college credit through the Prior Learning program.

Save yourself time and money as you pursue your bachelor’s degree.

  • Earn up to 30 credits for a single semester’s work
  • Cut whole semesters—even years—from the time it takes to complete your degree
  • Save money on the cost of tuition and textbooks
  • Get the maximum benefit from the resources you invest in your education program

Open Up a Whole New World of Opportunities

Prior Learning offers two options:

  1. Course Challenge
allows you to earn full credit for a course by completing the equivalent of a final exam.

  2. Portfolio Assessment (EXCEL) enables you to earn credit for learning you document in a portfolio that is reviewed by faculty experts.

“The Prior Learning program took a lot of my time and a great amount of work, but it was worth the effort. At my current pace, those 30 credits probably cut five years off my degree program.”
