Perkins Loans

Affording your higher education is within reach. UMUC participates in the Federal Perkins Loan Program to provide low-interest loans to students with exceptional need. Perkins awards are made by the financial aid office on a first-come, first-served basis. Get started by following the instructions below.

  1. Applying for a Perkins Loan

    To apply for the Perkins loan, you must complete the Free Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), available on the Department of Education's Web site.

    Please Note: To complete the application, you will need last year's tax returns. You will also need to include UMUC's School Code: 011644.

  2. Accepting Your Perkins Loan

    If you have been awarded a Perkins loan, you must officially accept your award online by accessing UMUC’s student portal.  After your awards have been accepted, you will be notified by the Perkins Coordinator to complete an Entrance Counseling session and Master Promissory Note (MPN).

    Please Note: These documents are in addition to the Entrance Counseling or MPN you completed for your Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized awards.

  3. Receiving Your Perkins Loan

    Once we have been notified that you are interested in receiving a Perkins loan, you will be emailed a packet including the Master Promissory Note (MPN), Entrance Interview instructions, and a Loan Disclosure Statement. 

    Please Note:     Your Perkins loan will not be disbursed to your account until we have received confirmation of a completed MPN, Entrance Interview, and Loan Disclosure Statement.
