Graduate Admission Requirements for International Students
Official Documentation Indicating Successful Completion of the Equivalent of a U.S. Baccalaureate Degree
Applicants educated in countries other than the United States must have their official transcripts evaluated by an independent evaluation service. The evaluation company will send a copy of the evaluation both to the applicant and to University of Maryland University College (UMUC). Providing the transcript does not ensure admission to the Graduate School.
Proof of English Language Proficiency
If English is not your native language, you need to demonstrate college-level proficiency in written English to UMUC by means of one of the following:
- A minimum score of 550 on the written version, or 79 on the Internet version, of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and a minimum score of 4 on the Test of Written English (TWE), except for the Internet-based TOEFL, where no TWE is required; or
- A minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS, including the academic writing and academic reading modules; or
- A minimum grade of Pre-1 on the Eiken English Proficiency Exam.
- A transcript indicating completion of at least 12 credits of graduate coursework within the past two years, with a grade of "B" or higher, at a regionally accredited U.S. degree-granting institution or college. All credit is subject to review before being accepted as evidence of English proficiency.
Applicants must arrange to have official score reports sent directly from the testing agency to Graduate Admissions. The TOEFL score recovery code for UMUC is 5804. All scores (TOEFL, IELTS and EIKEN) must be no more than two years old.
