Undergraduate Admission Requirements for International Students
If you are not a U.S. citizen, you must provide information on your visa or immigration status. To do so, enclose a copy of your permanent resident card, your visa and your I-94 departure card, or other proof of your current visa or immigration status with your admission application.
If English is not your native language, you need to demonstrate college-level proficiency in written English to University of Maryland University College (UMUC) by means of one of the following:
- A minimum score of 550 on the written version, or 79 on the Internet version, of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
- A minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), including the academic writing and academic reading modules.
- A minimum grade of Pre-1 on the Eiken English Proficiency Exam.
- A transcript indicating completion of a degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.
- A transcript indicating a grade of C or higher in an English composition course from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
Applicants must arrange to have official score reports sent directly from the testing agency to Undergraduate Admissions. The TOEFL score recovery code for UMUC is 5804. All scores (TOEFL, IELTS and EIKEN) must be no more than two years old.

If you have earned fewer than 24 semester hours at a U.S. college or university, you must verify your completion of the equivalent of a U.S. secondary education by
- Requesting an evaluation from an approved international credit evaluation agency
- Providing official transcripts showing completion of the U.S. GED exam with a total score of at least 2250 and no individual test score below 410. (If you completed the GED exam before January 2002, you must have a total score of at least 225, with no individual test score lower than 40.)
Until this verification is received by UMUC, you will be admitted for one semester only and limited to registering for a maximum of 7 semester hours. Once verification is received, you will be changed to regular status and may register for up to 18 semester hours. You will not be permitted to register for subsequent semesters until verification is received.
