Transfer Credit Evaluation

Requests for an evaluation of transfer credit can be made after a student has been admitted to UMUC. An advisor can help you with the process to determine whether any previous coursework is eligible to be accepted as transfer credit.

Undergraduate Credit Evaluation

If you have taken courses from a four-year college or a community college, those credits may count toward your undergraduate degree. You may transfer up to 90 semester hours of credit from an approved four-year college or university; up to 70 semester hours may be transferred from approved two-year community colleges. UMUC may also accept transfer credits from military and other non-traditional sources.

An official review of your transfer credit will be done upon receipt of all official transcripts/documents. Contact your academic advisor or new student advisor for more information.

Transfer Credit Criteria

Undergraduate credits must meet the following criteria:

  • Student must be currently enrolled at UMUC and have successfully completed at least 6 semester hours of credit with UMUC.
  • The student must have earned a minimum 2.0 GPA for all UMUC coursework to receive an official evaluation. Maryland public community college students, however, are excepted from this rule if they are enrolled in their final semester or have earned an associate's degree.
  • No transfer credit will be awarded without official transcripts.
  • Students requesting credit for course from an approved two- or four-year college or university must have earned a grade of C of better in the courses for which they are requesting credit.

Graduate Credit Evaluation

UMUC may accept up to 6 semester hours of graduate credit toward a graduate degree program at UMUC if earned at an approved institution and if related to the student's program of study. The Graduate School may accept up to 3 graduate transfer credits for certificate programs. The MBA, Executive programs, Doctor of Management, and Cybersecurity programs do not accept transfer credit.

Transfer Credit Criteria

All graduate credits offered for transfer credit must meet the following criteria:

  • The credits must have been earned as graduate credit.
  • The credits must not have been used to meet the requirements for any degree the student previously earned or is expected to earn.
  • The credits must have been awarded within the time limit for the degree or certificate.
  • The student must have earned a grade of B or better in the courses considered for transfer. (However, these grades are not included in the calculation of the student's grade-point  average.)
  • The department advisor and the program director must have determined that the transfer courses are relevant to the student's program of study.
  • The credits must have been earned at an approved institution and be equivalent to graduate-level coursework or recommended for graduate-level credit by the American Council on Education (ACE).
