Military Scholarship Programs

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) offers the following scholarship programs for active-duty military or spouses of active-duty military.

Some scholarship awards are made on the basis of academic performance and others on the basis of financial need. The eligibility requirements for each of the scholarships are listed below. All scholarships are available to undergraduate and graduate students at UMUC.

To be eligible, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and a degree-seeking student at UMUC. In addition, you must complete both the

Unless otherwise stated, the minimum enrollment requirement during the award period is 3 credits. UMUC scholarships are generally awarded for the fall and/or spring semesters only.

If you receive a scholarship you must complete 100 percent of your coursework during each enrollment period. If you receive an award for the academic year (fall and spring) but do not complete 100 percent of the coursework during the fall semester, your award will be automatically canceled for the spring semester. You may reapply for award consideration for the next academic year.

Note: Unless otherwise indicated, UMUC undergraduate scholarships require a minimum GPA of 2.5 and completion of 15 undergraduate credits at UMUC and UMUC graduate scholarships require a minimum GPA of 3.0 and completion of 9 graduate credits at UMUC.

 

Bank of America Veterans Assistance Fund at UMUC

  • Benefiting veterans whose educational benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have expired, or have been fully used
  • Demonstrated financial need

Blewitt Endowed Military Scholarship

  • Active-duty single parents, which includes Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and members of the Reserves who are and remain on active duty while receiving scholarship support. Their minor children are also eligible, or
  • Servicemembers who are wounded or have experienced illness related to their service in the global war on terror, and their spouse’s minor children or step-children are also eligible to apply. Servicemembers include Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard, as well as members of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Enlisted personnel will take priority over officers

Ed and Jean Miller Answering the Call Scholarship Award

  • Exclusively to those students who have served as part of the United States armed forces in a war zone in the past 24 months of the award, or are currently serving in a war zone,
  • Or to family members of soldiers who lost their lives in combat.

GEICO Federal/Military Scholarship Fund

  • Providing support to The Undergraduate School
  • GPA of a 2.8 or higher
  • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Open to spouses and children of the following (one or both categories)
    1. Federal employees in grades GS-1 through GS-15
    2. Active duty enlisted military service members

General John W. Vessey, Jr. Scholarship Fund

  • To provide educational expenses to degree-seeking students in the School of Undergraduate Studies
  • In addition, awards shall be given to students who meet one or more of the additional criteria, listed below in order of preference:
  • Have been awarded the Purple Heart medal since August 1, 2000
  • Are active duty military, guard and/or reserve members, or members of their immediate family
  • Have recently served as a member of the active military and are making the transition into civilian life
  • Any student with demonstrated financial need

Major General James and Dorothy Freeze Scholarship Fund

  • Active duty military, military spouses, or military veterans
  • Undergraduates only
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 at UMUC
  • Enrolled in 6 or more credit hours per semester
  • Scholarship award is $500.00 per semester, and can not exceed $1,000.00 per academic year
  • Eligible semesters: fall, spring and summer
  • Awarding is based on the availability of funding

ManTech Scholarship Fund-Military

  • Provides scholarship support to UMUC cybersecurity and information assurance students
  • Preference given to military, veterans and/or family members
  • Demonstrated financial need

Military Student Support Fund Scholarship

  • Active-duty military servicemember
  • Demonstrated financial need

President Gerald A. Heeger Tribute Scholarship

  • Active-duty military students, guard or reservists, or their immediate family members
  • Preference given to those that were awarded the Purple Heart since August 1, 2000
  • Have recently served as a member of the active-duty military and are making the transition into civilian life
  • Completion of 12 college credits
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0

Roscoe E. Dann Sr. Memorial Scholarship

  • Completion of at least 30 credits
  • Minimum GPA of a 3.0
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Preference given to veterans

The Apptis Wounded Warriors Scholarship Fund

  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Enroll for a minimum of 6 credits during the award period
  • Status as an active-duty service member honorably discharged or retired veteran or the spouse or dependent of an active-duty service member
  • Preference is given to various majors

The Bill G. Evans and Helen R. Endowed Fund

  • Preference given to military spouses, dependents and veterans who have been honorably discharged for ten years or more, and based on the following criteria:
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Enrolled in at least 6 credits during the award period

The Military Textbook Scholarship Fund

  • Priority given to UMUC's military student's currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq or other theater of operation
  • Demonstrated financial need

The Military Veteran Scholarship Fund

  • Provides scholarship support to military veterans, spouses and dependents
  • Preference given to veterans that served in Afghanistan and Iraq

The Northrop Grumman Scholarship Fund

  • Provides scholarship support to military spouses and dependents
  • Demonstrated financial need

The Orkand Family Military Scholarship Fund

  • Spouse of enlisted active-duty servicemember of the armed forces
  • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester
  • Demonstrated financial need

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Scholarship

  • Children and spouses of active-duty servicemembers who are the children of Vietnam-era veterans
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Demonstrated financial need
