Advising Worksheet

Prior to talking with your advisor for the first time, be sure to complete the Graduate Advising Worksheet. You should also try to gather:

  • A copy of your program requirements
  • A copy of all prior transcripts
  • A list of preliminary course selections
  • A list of any questions you may have

At UMUC, we encourage a partnership approach between students and the Academic Advising Office. We have a well-trained advising staff ready to assist you through all phases of your academic pursuit. Our advisors can help you

  • Choose a program of study
  • Develop a degree map/plan with courses for each term
  • Connect with valuable resources and services at UMUC

While advisors are dedicated to supporting you throughout your time at UMUC, there is a greater level of emphasis on student accountability at the graduate level. Your advisor should be your first point of contact for questions or concerns.

Academic Advising

Take Refresher Courses for Your Benefit

UMUC offers a number of optional, noncredit courses to help prepare you for success in your required courses. Following are some suggested courses:

UCSP 620 Financial Accounting
Recommended as preparation for MGMT 640. A basic study of financial accounting, encompassing basic financial concepts and their use in analyzing financial statements.

UCSP 621 Economics
Recommended as preparation for MGMT 640. An overview of both the microeconomic issues of supply and demand for individual companies and products and macroeconomic issues concerning inflation, unemployment, and recession for the economy as a whole.

UCSP 630 Introduction to Research Methods
Recommended as preparation for MGMT 650. A presentation of basic research techniques and methodologies used in organizational research and evaluation studies to make business decisions. This course can be taken as preparation for other graduate-level statistics courses as well as MGMT 650 and HAIN 650.

Course Notes: UCSP 615 is required within the first 6 credits of graduate study for all new graduate students and all inactive students who reapply for admission.
