The Office of Career Services at University of Maryland University College (UMUC) helps our students and alumni find jobs and plan their careers. Our quality resources and services fit the evolving needs of the university's talented and diverse students and alumni. Counseling Policies

Career Services' counseling policies outline key expectations for both Career Services staff and UMUC students.

Our Staff

Lisa Andrews, PhD, Director

Lisa Andrews has more than 15 years of experience in the career development field. Her areas of expertise include career counseling, assessment, public speaking on a variety of career-related topics, working with special populations, staff training and supervision, and budget management.

Before joining UMUC, she was director of career services at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. She also worked in career development at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi; Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania; and the University of Arizona.

She earned a PhD in higher education at the University of Arizona, master's in counseling and human relations at Villanova University, and bachelor's in psychology at Elizabethtown College.

Winifred A. Winston, Associate Director

Winifred A. Winston cultivates relationships with business decision makers and helps students progress from mere jobs to rewarding careers. Her career in higher education and the private sector spans 10 years.

Before joining UMUC, she was a career advisor at Argosy University in Washington, D.C., where she worked with graduate students and provided job search strategies, résumé reviews, and interview techniques. She also served as an employer and job development coordinator at the University of Baltimore.

Winston earned a Master of Science in Human Resource Development at Towson University and Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Ja'Kia Anthony, Recruitment Specialist

Ja'Kia Anthony has more than six years of experience in human resources and recruiting. Anthony aids others at workshops on human resources, recruitment and college preparation.

Before joining UMUC, she was a district recruiter at Allied Barton Security Services, where she focused on: recruiting and working with workforce development programs; career services offices at colleges and universities; and veterans to help them transition into the workforce.

She earned a Master of Science in Human Resources Management at Kaplan University and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Norfolk State University.

Alonzo Brown, Recruitment Specialist

Alonzo Brown helps students and career seekers plan and obtain their occupational goals. He has more than 10 years of experience in workforce development, staff and program management, career training, and assessment of diverse populations.

Brown also has developed partnership agreements with employers and community organizations.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism/Mass Communications at the University of Oklahoma and was certified in job development and placement at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Ann Martin, Career Advisor

Ann Martin originally joined Career Services as a graduate assistant in 2010. She brought well-developed communication skills from more than 20 years of experience in customer service and consultative sales.

She recently earned designations as a certified federal career coach and certified federal job search coach. Her growing areas of expertise include résumé writing, career exploration, and career planning. She aspires to be a licensed professional counselor, assisting people with life and career transitions.

Martin earned a bachelor's degree in consumer services at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She attends Bowie State University, where she's pursuing a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling.

Rhoda Smackum, Career Advisor

Rhoda Smackum is an associate certified career coach and global career development facilitator. Her areas of expertise include career coaching, career transition, career exploration, working with special populations, job search strategizing, and supervision.

Before joining UMUC, she was a manager in the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program sponsored by the Department of Defense. Her focus was supervising career advisors and counselors providing telephonic education and career services and resources for spouses of active-duty military service members worldwide. She also previously worked with students at Prince George's Community College.

Smackum earned a Bachelor of General Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park and Master of Arts at Bowie State University.
