A Message from the Provost |

Every day there is more evidence that the world is a funny place. Take, for example, the fact that some people are talking about lifelong learning as if they just discovered it. This is funny because we, at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), have been living the reality of lifelong learning for more than 60 years. UMUC is an institution dedicated to adult learning. We recognize that not everyone can go to school full-time between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. We know that life makes demands upon us and that we are not always able to pursue educational goals according to schedules established by someone else. At UMUC, we are here to help you achieve your dreams, whether as a part-time student or a full-time student, whether you’re taking courses on-site or via the World Wide Web, whether you are 25 years old or 65. At UMUC, we believe that everyone should have access to options which allow them to pursue their ambitions for post-secondary education. This means access to a fully accredited institution which offers high quality courses taught by highly qualified faculty members at times and in formats that meet your needs. We seek to remove barriers so that you can become a successful lifelong learner. This handbook will help you in the pursuit of that goal. At UMUC, we believe in continuous quality improvement. As you review the material in this handbook and access the services our institution provides, please let us know how we could work better for you. Our institution exists to serve you; please challenge us about how we can do an even better job with that service. Remember, as you embark upon the journey toward educational achievement, you are not alone. You, the student, and we, the institution, are partners and are making that journey together. Best wishes for a successful educational undertaking. Sincerely, James E. Sherwood, PhD |
