UMUC is committed to providing you with the services and tools you need to achieve your educational goals. As you register for classes, be sure to consider the following questions:
Your advisor can help you choose appropriate classes, based on your career goals, your previous coursework, and your degree requirements. Your advisor can also help you explore options for financing your education.
You
are responsible for being academically prepared to take a course. Prerequisites
for courses are available in the online Schedule of Classes by clicking
on the course number and in the Catalog under Course Descriptions.
Placement testing
is required for all lower-level English composition courses and for
most lower-level mathematics courses. Testing is conducted every Monday
through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Afternoon testing sessions are
held on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.. Testing sessions
are held in room 1252 of the Student and Faculty Services Center. Testing
is also provided during walk-in admission/IRIS registration.
PLEASE NOTE:
Be sure to allow time for your test to be scored and reported before
registering for courses. For more information, contact the UMUC Testing
Center by phone at 240-684-5429 or by e-mail at testingcenter@umuc.edu.

Testing Center Schedule.
See
the Catalog for restrictions on taking courses pass/fail.
If you do not wish to receive credit, you may audit courses. If you
register to audit, you must indicate via IRIS or on your registration
form that you wish to register for "audit" only. Auditors
pay the same tuition and fees as students taking the course for credit.
Special note for financial aid students: Audited courses
are not covered by financial aid, nor can they be counted toward the
half-time course load necessary for most financial aid. (See Financial
Aid.)
Students
working full time usually find 3 to 6 semester hours in fall and spring,
and 3 or 4 semester hours each summer term, a reasonable course load.
A full-time course load is defined as 12 semester hours or more, and
you may take up to 18 semester hours without prior approval. (To be
certified as a half-time undergraduate student, you must maintain 6
semester hours during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.) To take
more than 18 hours, submit a written request with your justification
to your advisor several weeks before you plan to register.
You
must be prepared to pay your tuition at the time you register, so be
sure to investigate assistance options and complete any necessary paperwork
in advance. (See Tuition and Fees.)
Many
classes have strict enrollment limits and may fill early during registration.
If you must have a specific course, you increase your chance to enroll
by registering early. UMUC reserves the right to cancel courses for
insufficient enrollments, to limit enrollments in any course, and to
reassign students to added or divided sections meeting the same day
and time. You can check class availability by accessing the Schedule
of Classes.
If
you need accommodations because of a disability, you should contact
the technical director for veteran and disabled student services at
301-985-7930 (or 301-985-7466 TTY) each semester before registering.
