Adelphi, Md.  (July 15, 2008) – UMUC today announced a new joint graduate-level certificate in E-Learning and Instructional System Design in cooperation with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The certificate provides students with knowledge and skills in the field of course design, development and delivery at a distance, with a focus on e-learning.

“We are excited to partner with UMBC to create a program that addresses the changing trends and professional opportunities in distance education,” said Dr. Susan C. Aldridge, president of University of Maryland University College. “This partnership demonstrates UMUC’s continuing commitment to leading the way in the development and evolution of online education.”

The joint certificate program is being launched in response to growing interest in the field of e-learning and distance education, and couples UMUC’s expertise in distance education and technology with UMBC’s background in instructional design and course development. The certificate requires a total of 12 credits—six from UMUC and six from UMBC—covering topics such as training at a distance, use of technology in distance education, and instructional design. Credits earned toward the certificate are transferable to degree programs, as well, so students can go on to pursue graduate degrees in distance education at either university, if they so choose.

“As a national leader in information technology education, UMBC is proud to partner with UMUC on an e-learning program that will further strengthen Maryland’s high-tech workforce,” said Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, president of UMBC. “Together, UMBC and UMUC will offer a first-rate, flexible program to students interested in e-learning and distance education careers.”

Students interested in the certificate program must apply and be admitted to either UMBC or UMUC. Upon admission, students will be given a unique opportunity to take classes at both universities, as well as the flexibility to take the required courses in any sequence. The program is designed specifically for students who are interested in learning the latest trends in distance education and furthering their professional careers in the e-learning field.
