Put Your Plan into Action
Now that you have selected a major, there are a few more steps you should take to ensure success in your studies and in your career.
Notify your advisor of your decision. Your advisor will note your major in your student records. At this time, your advisor can answer your questions about the program, such as which major courses you should take first.
Make sure all of your previous credit is evaluated for your degree. Arrange to have all of your transcripts showing credit earned from other colleges, universities, credit by examination, and military and professional experience sent to UMUC. A transcript request form is available through MyUMUC. Once official transcripts have been received and you have selected a major, your degree progress and transfer credit can be reviewed.
Check your degree and major requirements regularly. Each semester before you register, review the requirements for your program to determine which courses you should take. Remember to save your official evaluation and refer to it frequently. This will help you ensure that you do not take any duplicate courses.
Continue your career planning. Choosing a major is an important step in planning your future career, but it is not the end of the process. As you pursue your studies at UMUC, you should re-evaluate your plan often and add to your knowledge about your career. If you are ready to begin a job search, consider enrolling in the one-credit course CAPL 398A Career Planning Management or the non-credit Job Development Seminar . Both courses address self-assessment, resume development, networking techniques, and interview preparation.
