Learner Support Workshop
The Learner Support Workshop will be led by Christine Walti, assistant director of Continuing Education and Workforce Development eLearning at Anne Arundel Community College and Jane E. Brindley, PhD, CPsych, University of Windsor, Canada.
The workshop objectives are to develop a common understanding of the role of learner support in education, consider the factors that determine the types of learner support needed by a particular institution, review the variety of services that can be offered from a learner's first enquiry through graduation and beyond, and identify some of the recent trends in learner support (e.g. portals, e-portfolios, seamless service provision, call centers, Web 2.0 technologies).
Participants will have an opportunity to assess and discuss learner support practices at their home institutions and are encouraged to bring samples of any information or self-help materials.

Best Practices in Support of Online Teaching
Are you an administrator, faculty support staff, instructional designer or technologist, or faculty member involved in online or hybrid teaching? Then you won't want to miss this workshop, being led by Dr. Susan Ko, PhD, of UMUC's Center for Teaching and Learning.
Faculty development and support of online teaching are essential for the success of an online or hybrid education program as well as for the satisfaction and retention of faculty. This workshop will focus on identifying some key elements of effective online and hybrid (blended f2f and online) teaching and methods by which these can be promoted through faculty development and support regardless of the size or resources of an institution.
Training and support should encompass a variety of approaches to meet the needs of faculty and must address both the pedagogical as well as the technical aspects of online teaching. Also addressed will be situations in which faculty must devise their own support networks.
Through the use of some real-life scenarios, participants will consider possible training and support solutions to issues that typically arise in the preparation for and teaching of online and hybrid classes. Workshop participants will be encouraged to share their experience and concerns.

Second Life Workshop
This hands-on workshop, led by Ilene Frank and Joe Floyd, will give participants a chance to begin exploring the exciting virtual world of Second Life.
With around three hundred schools, libraries, and museums participating, Second Life provides a 3D immersive platform where educators and students can build environments for courses, set up exhibitions, offer lectures and performances, and more. For example, the ESL China Café provides a meeting place for Chinese speakers to practice English and for English speakers to learn more about China.
Workshop participants will join in on this educational and fun experience and learn some basic commands for navigating Second Life.
