University of Maryland University College (UMUC) offers undergraduate classes at the Fort Detrick, Detrick Center for Training and Education Excellence (DCTEE).

This site is located on a military installation. Please call this location to receive information on base access (301-619-2854). In some instances, a FERPA Release Form may be required. (See Other Important Information.)

Directions and Parking

Directions to Fort Detrick

From Frederick
From 270 North, take Route 15 toward Gettysburg. Take the 7th Street exit and make a right at the end of the exit. Follow about 1/2 mile to the entrance of Fort Detrick.

Directions to Advising Services at Fort Detrick

From Baltimore, Maryland: Take Interstate 695 around Baltimore to Interstate 70 West. In Frederick, take Exit #53, Route 15 North. Follow Rt 15 North to the 7th Street exit. Turn right on 7th Street, follow 4 blocks to Fort Detrick's Main Gate.

From Washington, DC: Take Interstate 495 North to Interstate 270 (Exit #38) toward Rockville, MD. At Frederick, Interstate 270 ends and joins Route 15 North. Follow Rt 15 North to the 7th Street exit. Turn right on 7th Street follow 4 blocks to Fort Detrick's Main Gate.

Advising

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) offers student advising services at Fort Detrick to support students taking classes online, at Fort Detrick or at other UMUC locations.

A UMUC advisor is available on Fort Detrick, at the District Center for Training and Education Excellence (Bldg 1520), once a month on the third Thursday of the month. Please call 301-619-2854 to make an appointment.

Test Proctoring for Undergraduate Students

The DCTEE may be able to provide an approved proctor for undergraduate online course examinations. Contact the Education Center at 301-619-2174 for more information. Note: Any fees for approved individual proctors are your responsibility.

Library Services

  • At the Academic Center at Largo, UMUC librarians are available Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Room 1105.

  • UMUC staff members are also available during selected hours at McKeldin Library at College Park (UMCP campus).

  • At either location, you can access the online catalog of the University System of Maryland (USM), more than 100 databases (over 50 of which provide full text journal and newspaper articles), and tutorials on how to do research.

  • Materials from any USM library can be delivered to you at Academic Center at Largo. Call 240-684-2020 or 800-888-UMUC (8682), option 3, ext. 2020 for more information or visit the UMUC Library.

Other Important Information

The Detrick Center for Training and Education Excellence (DCTEE) is located within Fort Detrick, a U.S. Army base, thus security is tight and all security procedures are strictly enforced. Due to the tragic events of 9/11 and continuing high state of alertness, all visitors to Fort Detrick must:

  1. Enter through the Main Gate, which is located on Seventh Street.

  2. Present two (2) photo IDs at the Main Gate (e.g., driver's license, NIH ID, passport).

  3. Expect that your vehicle will be searched, including the trunk and any boxes, bags, or other items.

Students do not have to sign in as a visitor. Students and faculty might consider going to the classroom prior to the first class to ascertain how long it might take.
