University of Maryland University College (UMUC) offers undergraduate classes at NCI-Frederick. This site is located on a military installation. Please call this location to receive information on base access. In some instances, a FERPA waiver form may be required.

Directions

From Baltimore, Maryland:
Total Distance: About 53 miles

  • I-695 west toward Towson to I-70 west (about 20 miles)
  • I-70 west (exit 16) to Frederick (about 45 miles)
  • As you approach Frederick, you will exit at Route 15 north to Frederick/Gettysburg, PA
  • Follow Route 15 North to the Fort Detrick/7th Street Exit
  • Bear right at the bottom of the ramp onto 7th Street
  • Follow straight to Fort Detrick entrance
  • Turn right into the main gate

From Washington, D.C.:
Total Distance: About 55 miles

  • I-270 North to Frederick
  • As you approach Frederick, I-270 ends and becomes Route 15 north to Frederick/Gettysburg, PA
  • Follow Route 15 North to the Fort Detrick/7th Street Exit
  • Bear right at the bottom of the ramp onto Seventh Street
  • Follow straight to Fort Detrick entrance
  • Turn right into the main gate

Directions to Building 549 after entering the 7th St Veteran’s Gate:

  • Turn left at the stop light onto Porter Street
  • Turn right onto Ditto Avenue
  • Turn left onto Sultan Street
  • Follow Sultan Street through stop sign, and veer right at the fork
  • Building 549 will be on your right

Advising

UMUC offers on-site student advising services to support students taking classes online, at NCI-Frederick or at other UMUC locations.

A UMUC advisor is available on Fort Detrick at the District Center for Training & Education Excellence (Building 1520), once a month on the third Thursday of the month from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Please call 301-619-2854 to make an appointment.

Testing Services

This location offers the following types of testing services for members of the military and the civilian community with base access:

  • Placement testing for writing and math courses on a walk-in basis.
  • Proctoring services for non-UMUC students.

Library Services

A library service area is available at the Academic Center at Largo. Librarians are also available via e-mail, chat, phone and instant message. Materials from any University System of Maryland library can be delivered to you at the Academic Center at Largo. Call 240-684-2020 or 800-888-UMUC (8682), option 3, ext. 2020 to learn more. Security

The National Cancer Institute at Frederick (NCI-Frederick) is located within Fort Detrick, a U.S. Army base. Security procedures are strictly enforced. Due to recent conditions of heightened security, all visitors to Fort Detrick must:

  1. Enter through the main gate, which is located on 7th Street.

  2. Present two photo IDs (e.g., driver's license, NIH ID, passport).

  3. Expect that your vehicle will be searched, including the trunk and any boxes, bags or other items.

Students do not have to sign in as a visitor; you can report directly to Building 549, where classes are held. Students and faculty should visit the classroom prior to the first class to plan proper timing.
