An Important Message from USM Chancellor William E. Kirwan

February 28, 2012

Dear Members of the University of Maryland University College Community:

I realize that it has been almost a week since I reported to you that President Susan Aldridge was on leave for an undetermined duration, which understandably raised many questions. Regrettably, the situation remains the same and it may be a few weeks before I can give you further information in this regard. I am very aware of the concerns you might have during this period, but I can assure you that everything is being done to make certain that UMUC continues its climb to new heights as a world class leader in non-traditional, online and cyber security education.

Fortunately, the management team that has served under President Aldridge and has helped make this incredible University what it is today, is committed to push ahead and make sure UMUC does not miss a step in its climb up the ladder. While Susan is on leave, Javier Miyares, senior vice president for institutional effectiveness, will continue to serve as acting president and I will be closely involved in helping Javier and the team.

In the meantime, please also know that I have always viewed UMUC as one of the "jewels," not only of the University System of Maryland but also as a model of innovation and responsiveness for all of higher education. I intend to do everything in my power to make sure the institution continues on its very impressive trajectory and to serve the needs of our state and nation.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Sincerely yours,

William E. Kirwan
Chancellor
