September 26 reception honored Philanthropists of the Year, granted naming rights to painting and sculpture galleries and study center in the Leroy Merritt Center for the Art of Joseph Sheppard
ADELPHI, MD (September 29, 2011) – UMUC celebrated the success of its fundraising campaign—"The Campaign for UMUC: Building a Legacy of Educational Opportunities"—with a September 26, 2011, ceremony and reception. Dr. Donald S. Orkand, himself a major donor and the campaign chair, reported that the campaign brought in a total of $26,438,253.12, surpassing the seven-year goal of $26 million.
"In FY2011, 1,988 UMUC students received more than $3.3 million in scholarships, thanks to the generous support of thousands of donors and the efforts of the fundraising team in Institutional Advancement," said Orkand. "These funds make an immediate and lasting impact on the lives of students—and those students, in turn, go on to strengthen the workforce and the very fabric of society in Maryland, across the country, and around the world. These gifts truly represent an investment in the future."
Dorothy L. and Henry A. Rosenberg Jr. were honored at the reception as UMUC Philanthropists of the Year for their contribution to scholarships and support for the UMUC Arts Program. UMUC President Susan C. Aldridge voiced her personal appreciation to thousands of donors for supporting student scholarships, adding, "We are pleased to name Dorothy L. and Henry A. Rosenberg Jr. as UMUC’s Philanthropists of the Year, and to offer a permanent reminder of their generosity. The painting gallery in the Leroy Merritt Center for the Art of Joseph Sheppard has been formally named the Dorothy L. and Henry A. Rosenberg Jr. Painting Gallery in their honor. Other major donors are being honored as well, with the gallery’s study center formally named the Michael J. and Patricia K. Batza Jr. Study Center and the sculpture gallery named the George M. and Betsy Sherman Sculpture Gallery. Because of the generosity of these and other donors, UMUC is better positioned to fulfill its mission and support its students with cutting-edge programs and services as well as more generous scholarship funds."
