UMUC Alumni Association Honors the Late Michael Lief Bjerknes

Alumni Association will name Bjerknes 2008 IMAN Chapter Outstanding Alumnus at the 9th Annual Dinner and Awards Celebration, November 1, 2008.

Adelphi, Md. (Oct. 28, 2008) — The UMUC International Management (IMAN) Chapter of the Alumni Association will grant the late Michael Lief Bjerknes the 2008 IMAN Chapter Outstanding Alumnus Award at its 9th Annual Dinner and Awards Celebration, Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the UMUC Inn and Conference Center in Adelphi, Maryland William A. Reinsch, president of the National Foreign Trade Council and former under secretary for export administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce, will present the keynote address.

Bjerknes, a 1997 graduate of the university’s Master of International Management program, enjoyed a distinguished career as a principal dancer with the Houston Ballet and soloist with the Joffrey Ballet, later teaching and serving as ballet master at the Washington Ballet and the Universal Ballet in Seoul. In 2000, he drew on his experience and credentials in international business and finance to found the American Dance Institute in Rockville, Maryland, in partnership with his wife, Pamela Bjerknes, a former member of the American Ballet Theatre. Ms. Bjerknes will accept the award on behalf of her late husband, who passed away in April of this year.

“Michael Bjerknes was a creative force in the Maryland and Washington, D.C., artistic community for decades and used his education and expertise in international business and finance to benefit and enrich that community,” said UMUC President Susan C. Aldridge. “We are pleased and proud to honor his life and memory with the 2008 IMAN Chapter Outstanding Alumnus Award. It is richly deserved.”

The IMAN Chapter Outstanding Alumnus Award is granted each year to a graduate of the Master of International Management program who has gone on to demonstrate outstanding application of international management principles.
