ADELPHI, MD (April 25, 2011)—UMUC announced today that it has selected James H. Selbe to serve as vice president, Department of Military Operations. In this new role, Selbe will represent UMUC in all issues affecting military voluntary education and veterans affairs, as well as serving as the university's representative to major national associations like the Council of College and Military Educators (CCME) and National Association of Institutions for Military Education Services (NAIMES), which advise the U.S. Department of Defense on educational and operational issues within the military community.

Selbe—a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps—comes to UMUC from the American Council on Education (ACE), where he served for more than a decade in a variety of roles, most recently as assistant vice president of lifelong learning.  In that position, Selbe transformed the Center for Lifelong Learning from a focus on access to higher education to a focus on postsecondary attainment, while securing more than $5 million from philanthropic foundations and private gifts to support returning veterans.  In 2009, Selbe was appointed to the Veterans Advisory Committee on Education by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and in 2008 received the President's Award from CCME for developing an innovative program to help injured veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan pursue their dreams of a collage education.  Earlier, he served as regional director of military programs for Old Dominion University and as an adjunct instructor at Central Texas College.

"UMUC is pleased and proud to welcome James H. Selbe as vice president of the Department of Military Operations," said UMUC President Susan C. Aldridge. "Given Jim's leadership and accomplishments at ACE, coupled with his background in higher education and years of service to his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, this position is a natural fit. We know that he will bring exceptional leadership to the Department of Military Operations and exceptional service to our military student population, helping to uphold UMUC's long and proud tradition of serving those who serve in our nation's armed forces."

As vice president of UMUC's Department of Military Operations, Selbe will direct and manage a unit that provides student services for the university's military students worldwide and contracts support specifically for UMUC's military education programs overseas. He will also develop and manage special military-related projects, including grant submissions, institutional advancement activities and UMUC's participation in military conferences.

Selbe is a frequent speaker at national and state conferences on topics that include the evaluation of non-traditional education experiences, non-traditional academic transcripts and transfer of academic credit for the mobile student, and lifelong learning trends and innovative practices. Selbe is himself a graduate of UMUC, earning an MEd in counseling and personnel services; he received his BS in management from National Louis University.
