UMUC Signs Collaborative Agreement with the University of South Africa

New agreement will develop cultural, scholarly and scientific ties that will benefit students at both institutions

September 30, 2010

ADELPHI, MD (September 30, 2010)—UMUC announced today that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the University of South Africa (UNISA)—the largest university on the African continent, with 330,000 students. The agreement is designed to foster cultural, scholarly and scientific ties between the institutions; to encourage academic exchange and collaboration; and to advance education and training.

UMUC President Susan C. Aldridge, PhD, and UNISA Principal and Vice-Chancellor Barney Pityana, PhD, signed the three-year MOU September 10, 2010, in Pretoria, South Africa. Under the partnership, both parties agree to cooperate and collaborate based on their respective academic and educational needs and resources.

"This partnership between UMUC and UNISA is a testament to our commitment to furthering educational opportunities beyond our borders, and we believe the exchanges of scholars, research and academic information will greatly benefit students at both institutions," said President Aldridge. "We are pleased and proud to work with scholars and students alike at UNISA, and we look forward to positive outcomes that this agreement will produce for all involved."

The MOU outlines five opportunities for cooperation that the universities may choose to pursue:

  1. Direct contact and cooperation between faculty and college members, departments and research institutes.
  2. Virtual exchanges or short term visits by faculty, graduate and undergraduate students in research and instruction.
  3. Involvement in UMUC’s online training programs.
  4. Joint research programs and publications in academic and professional journals.
  5. Temporary assignments of faculty and administrative staff from one institution to another to instruct, conduct research or manage programs.
