UMUC Bestows President’s Medal on Dr. and Mrs. Donald S. and Kim L. Orkand

Longtime supporters of the university have served in leadership roles, endowed scholarships and established the Orkand Endowed Chair in management and technology

ADELPHI, MD (May 20, 2011)—UMUC announced today that it has granted the UMUC President’s Medal to Dr. and Mrs. Donald S. and Kim L. Orkand for service to and support of the university.

Dr. Donald S. Orkand is a successful entrepreneur who founded the Orkand Corporation in 1970 and, more recently, co-founded DC Ventures and Associates, a mergers and acquisitions firm. Over the years, he has served on a variety of business, professional, and academic governing bodies, including the board of the University of Maryland Foundation, Inc., and Suburban Hospital. A member of the UMUC Board of Visitors since 2001 and the past chair of the board, he established the Orkand Endowed Scholarships for UMUC undergraduates and the Orkand Endowed Chair in management and technology in the UMUC Graduate School of Management and Technology.

Mrs. Kim L. Orkand has also enjoyed a distinguished career, managing large-scale projects for more than 20 years in the field of information technology, including financial, healthcare, and administrative systems development. Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards for leadership and exceptional performance.

According to UMUC policy, the President’s Medal may be awarded by the president on behalf of the university "to recognize distinguished, extraordinary, and extensive service on behalf of, and in support of, UMUC or service to the larger community." It also stipulates that recipients have "a high record of professional or civic accomplishment, a reputation of high integrity, and a commitment to the advancement of lifelong learning."
