Marcia Watson, PhD, serves as the vice provost for Academic Affairs. Her responsibilities include ensuring that the university is in compliance with accreditation standards and with the academic policies and regulations of the University System of Maryland and the State of Maryland. Dr. Watson also facilitates the shared governance process at UMUC by serving as ex-officio member on the various advisory councils, and oversees the Offices of the Registrar, Institutional Research (IR), and International Programs.
In addition to her administrative duties, Dr. Watson teaches online biology courses as an adjunct professor for UMUC and has a special interest in biology instruction for non-science majors.
Prior to joining UMUC in January of 2010, Dr. Watson was an administrator and, earlier, a full-time faculty member, at her alma mater, the University of Delaware (UD). Her experience at Delaware included roles in the Provost's Office, academic advisement, first-year experience programs, and the development of an associate degree program for under-prepared students.
Dr. Watson holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from UD as well as a BA with High Honors in Psychology. Her teaching experience includes introductory and advanced courses in general biology, anatomy and physiology, and endocrinology. For twenty years, she conducted research that dealt with the relationship between circadian (daily) rhythms and seasonal cycles of reproduction in mammals.
