CALL FOR PROPOSALS
We invite you to submit a proposal for the Fifth Annual UMUC July Writing Conference. Proposals are due May 31, 2008.
Please note
- Participants are welcome to submit more than one proposal.
- Participants are welcome to submit a panel proposal.
All presentations will be 40 minutes followed by discussion.
All ideas are welcome! The following are some suggestions:
Teaching Content Through Writing and Teaching Writing Through Content
- How do your students use writing to develop their understanding of content?
- How do you use the discussion of content to develop students' writing abilities?
Teaching Information Literacy Skills When Assigning Writing
- What methods have you found to be effective in helping students incorporate sources into their writing?
- What challenges have you found in teaching information literacy?
Integrating Critical Thinking Skills into the Classroom
- What methods have you found to be effective in helping students develop critical thinking skills?
- What challenges have you found in teaching critical thinking skills?
Giving Feedback to Students on their Writing
- What methods of feedback have you found that work in helping students revise assignments?
- How have you been able to incorporate peer review effectively?
Assessing and Grading Students on their Writing
- What rubrics have you found to be effective in determining student grades in a fair and reasonable manner?
- What concerns or issues have you found to be significant in assessing and grading student writing?
Using Technology in Assigning, Responding to, or Assessing Writing
- What technology applications have you found to be effective?
- How have you been able to make the online classroom feel more personal through the use of technology?
Addressing Student Readiness when Assigning Writing
- What patterns and potential concerns in student preparation have you found when assigning writing to students?
- How have you addressed the wide-ranging writing skills of students in your classroom?
Integrating Writing and Communication
- How do you use formal and informal communication in your classroom?
- What forms of group interaction do you use in your classes?

Applying Theory in Practice
