UMUC-NMFA Scholarship for Military Spouses

Scholarship Overview

Through the UMUC-NMFA Scholarship program, University of Maryland University College awards up to 15 scholarships, worth up to $1,500 each, through the National Military Family Association to spouses of active-duty, Reservist, and/or National Guard servicemembers.

The scholarship is available to new or prospective students who have never attended UMUC prior to spring 2019 and who will be seeking a first undergraduate degree at UMUC. The scholarship will cover up to two full courses (6 credits). Spouses must be registered with NMFA before submitting an online application for admission to UMUC to be eligible.

Applications will be accepted through December 31, 2018.

Eligibility Criteria

A candidate for this scholarship must be a UMUC student who

  • Is a registered member of the NMFA
  • Is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident noncitizen
  • Is a new or prospective student to UMUC (never attended UMUC prior to spring 2019)
  • Is a military spouse of an active-duty, Reserve, or National Guard servicemember
  • Is a degree-seeking student pursuing a first undergraduate degree
  • Is enrolled or will enroll in at least 6 credits during spring 2019
  • Is not receiving 100 percent Tuition Assistance or reimbursement from work
  • Is not eligible for 100 percent veterans benefits (COE level needs to be less than 100 percent)

Scholarship Deadline Information

Students must apply for the NMFA Scholarship by December 31, 2018, for spring 2019.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the UMUC-NMFA Scholarship application by December 31, 2018.
  2. Complete the UMUC application for admission and include the $50 application fee by December 31, 2018.
  3. Submit proof of military status to the Office of Admissions Services at admissions@umuc.edu or fax to 240-684-2153 by January 4, 2019.

    Documents include

    • A copy of DEERS form 1172-2

      OR

    • A copy of your marriage certificate AND one of the following:
      • Proof of sponsor's service statement or letter
      • Copy of sponsor's most recent enlistment or commissioning contract
      • Copy of sponsor's Tuition Assistance form showing military service expiration date
      • Copy of sponsor's Leave and Earnings statement with military service expiration date
  4. Have your high school or previous institution(s) send official transcripts directly to UMUC by January 11, 2019.

    Students who have earned credit at another previous regionally accredited college or university will need to submit official copies of these transcripts. (Students with less than 24 credits will need to submit a high school transcript to verify their high school diploma. If you have completed a GED or other high school proficiency examination that is recognized by your state, you will need to submit the official documents.)

Students may contact a UMUC advisor at any time after being admitted to request an evaluation of transfer credits and design a degree completion plan during their first term.

Scholarship Award and Disbursement

Selection for the scholarship awards will be judged solely on the essay. Students will be notified by January 25, 2019, if they will be awarded this scholarship.

Students may register for the spring 2019 term at any time prior to the NMFA Scholarship application deadline but are responsible for providing payment for all courses at the time of enrollment. Early registration does not influence the scholarship award decision.

If selected for the scholarship, the scholarship funds will be applied to your account within 10 business days of enrollment in courses.
