VA Benefits: What causes a veteran's Chapter 33 Benefits to decrease?

Question: What causes a veteran's Chapter 33 Benefits (Post-9/11 GI Bill) to decrease?

Answer: Non-refundable scholarships, tuition assistance (from the military, employers, private industry, and the government), tuition remission from employers, external aid payments, Military Spouse Career Advancement Account (MYCAA), and University System of Maryland (USM) waivers will reduce the amount of tuition and fees reported to the VA.

For additional assistance, please call the Department of Veterans Affairs Education Customer Service Office at 888-442-4551.

Note: Grants and loans do not reduce Chapter 33 benefits.

More information about education benefits offered by the VA is available on the GI Bill website.
