Arts Program Trip to Cuba

You're invited to tour to Havana, Cuba, on an educational art trip from April 13 to April 20, 2019, with the UMUC Arts Program and Art Advisory Board. Join other art patrons, collectors, and enthusiasts as we spend a week in Cuba for the 13th Havana International Art Biennial. We will immerse ourselves in Cuban art, including studio visits with artists, tours of galleries and museums, and visits to cultural attractions.

Dates: April 13–20, 2019

Itinerary

Day 1: Saturday, April 13

  • Arrive in Havana
  • Hotel check in and cocktail hour
  • Welcome dinner at Mediterraneo restaurant

Day 2: Sunday, April 14

  • Guided visit to the Museum of Fine Arts Cuban Collection
  • Lunch at La Moneda Cubana restaurant in Old Havana
  • Visit to various exhibits of the 13th Havana International Art Biennial
  • Guided walking tour of Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including Cathedral Square, Square of Arms, Palacio de los Capitanes Generales (the former official residence of the governors of Havana, now home to the Museum of the City of Havana), Palacio del Segundo Cabo, San Francisco Square, and the studio of artist Kadir Lopez
  • Attendance at the cannon firing ceremony at the Fortress of San Carlos de La Cabana

Day 3: Monday, April 15

  • Visit to various exhibits of the 13th Havana International Art Biennial
  • Studio visit with artist Karlos Perez
  • Lunch hosted by Jose Fuster, Cuban ceramist and painter
  • Studio visits with Lazaro Saavedra and Jose Angel Toirac
  • Visit to Fabrica de Arte (Factory of Art)—optional, not included in Ground Package cost

Day 4: Tuesday, April 16

  • Day trip to the city of Matanzas
  • Rest stop in Bacunayagua Bridge for a piña colada
  • Visit to various exhibits of the 13th Havana International Art Biennial in Matanzas
  • Visit to publishing house Ediciones Vigia, including meeting with Director Agustina Ponce, publishers, and artists
  • Visit to the Varadero Ceramic Workshop and Gallery
  • Panoramic motor coach tour of the Peninsula de Hicacos, Varadero, and free time at the beach
  • Performance of Latin jazz at Club La Zorra y El Cuervo—optional, not included in Ground Package cost

Day 5: Wednesday, April 17

  • Studio visits with photographers René Peña and Leysis Quesada
  • Lunch at El Aljibe restaurant
  • Visit to various exhibits of the 13th Havana International Art Biennial
  • Visit to Amos photography gallery for a meeting with photographer Ramses Batista
  • Performance of the world-famous Buena Vista Social Club at the Habana Cafe cabaret—optional, not included in Ground Package cost

Day 6: Thursday, April 18

  • Visit to various exhibits of the 13th Havana International Art Biennial
  • Studio visit with Manuel Mendive
  • Ferryboat ride across Havana harbor to Regla, including visits to Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Regla; Callejón de Hamel; and studio visits with Salvador Gonzales Escalona, Niels Reyes, and Rafael Villares
  • Salsa music performance at the Hotel Habana Libre—optional, not included in Ground Package cost

Day 7: Friday, April 19

  • Visit to various exhibits of the 13th Havana International Art Biennial
  • Free time in the handicraft market of Old Havana, located inside the Almacenes de Depósito San José
  • Farewell dinner at paladar Elite

Day 8: Saturday, April 20

  • Transfer to Havana International Airport for departure

Ground Package Cost: $2,429 (Airfare not included. Prices are per person based on double room occupancy; single room supplement is $490.)

Ground Package includes:

  • Seven nights at the Iberostar Habana Riviera Hotel in Havana
  • 13 meals (hotel breakfast daily, plus lunch on four days and dinner on two nights)
  • Havana International Art Biennial All-Access Pass

  • An expert Cuban-English speaking guide and translator throughout the program, together with ongoing support from Authentic Cuba Travel staff in Cuba and Canada

Registration: All participants must register online at Authentic Cuba Travel. You will be required to create an account. After you create your account, you will receive an e-mail confirmation detailing the next steps. The e-mail will also have some important reminders.

Payment for Ground Package:

  • A nonrefundable deposit of $300 per person is required at the time of registration.
  • Balance of payment is due by February 27, 2019.
