University of Maryland University College has a chapter of Student Veterans of America, the largest group of student veterans in the world. SVA is a grassroots organization begun 10 years ago to provide military veterans with the resources, support, and advocacy they need to succeed in higher education and in their lives after graduation. UMUC's chapter provides students with access to all the resources and opportunities associated with SVA membership.
Whether you're still in uniform, recently made the transition, or have been out of the military for years, the best way to land a civilian job is to network. At the SVA, networking is woven into the fabric of the organization. SVA has corporate partners like Raytheon, Disney, Amazon, Google, Northrop Grumman, Apple, USAA, and TEKSystems that work with SVA to hire student veterans.
Earlier this month, members of the UMUC chapter of SVA attended the 2018 Student Veterans of America National Conference in San Antonio, Texas, the largest annual gathering of student veterans, advocates, thought-leaders, stakeholders, and supporters in higher education in the world. There they had the opportunity to meet with employers, leaders, other SVA chapters, and the leadership from the national headquarters to discuss the opportunities student veterans have today. You can view all of the general sessions, which were streamed via Facebook Live. You can also check out this article from Military Times about the conference.
