Professional Licensure

Find out about professional licensure before beginning an academic program at University of Maryland University College.

UMUC highly recommends that prospective and current students considering an academic program that leads to professional licensure contact the appropriate licensing agency or board in the state in which the student wishes to obtain licensure to seek additional information and guidance before beginning the academic program.

UMUC does not guarantee that programs that fulfill Maryland licensure requirements will satisfy the criteria for initial licensure established by other states or territories.

Some states' laws require a criminal background check and may disqualify an individual from obtaining licensure if the individual has been convicted of certain crimes. If a prospective or current student has a criminal background, please check with the appropriate licensing agency or board in the state in which the student wishes to work for more information.

Accounting Programs

UMUC currently offers the following accounting programs: Bachelor of Science in accounting, Master of Science in accounting and financial management, and Master of Science in management with an accounting specialization. These programs are designed to help prepare students to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Exam and/or obtain initial licensure as a Certified Public Accountant in Maryland. To sit for the CPA Exam in Maryland, a candidate is required to have successfully completed 120 credits toward an accounting degree. Many other states and territories, however, require candidates to successfully complete 150 credits prior to sitting for the CPA Exam.

To obtain initial licensure as a CPA in Maryland and most other states and territories, a candidate is required to have successfully completed 150 credits. Maryland has additional requirements to obtain initial licensure as a CPA, not all of which can be fulfilled through education. Learn more about Maryland's requirements for initial licensure. Other states and territories may also have additional requirements.

Students seeking licensure in another state or territory are advised to contact the appropriate licensing agency or board in their state to determine whether the student may be eligible to sit for the CPA Exam and obtain initial licensure in their state after successful completion of UMUC's accounting program. If a student is not eligible to sit for the CPA Exam or obtain initial licensure after completing UMUC's program, students are advised to inquire whether their state will grant a reciprocal CPA license if the student has become licensed as a CPA in Maryland.

Please note: UMUC may accept transfer credit on a case-by-case basis from a non-regionally accredited institution that is accredited by a national accrediting agency approved by the U.S. Department of Education or Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Similarly, UMUC may admit an applicant to a graduate accounting program on a case-by-case basis who has obtained a bachelor's degree or has some credit on their undergraduate transcript from a similarly accredited institution. The Maryland Board of Public Accountancy, however, may not accept such credit or degrees as meeting the education requirements to sit for the CPA Exam and/or to obtain initial licensure as a CPA in Maryland. Contact the Maryland Board of Public Accountancy to learn more about Maryland's education requirements for initial licensure. Other state and territory boards may not accept such credit or degrees. Please contact the appropriate state or territory board for more information.
